Uruguay - Italy friendly

posted by Meya, date: 17. November 2011, News Archives/Archivos de noticias

On Tuesday, Uruguay continued rolling with victorious punches by beating Italy 1-0 in a friendly played in Rome. The Italian squad played better, but, like always, Uruguay’s composure held out and won with an opportunistic goal.
The champions of Copa America played without key players, Luis Suarez and Diego Forlan, but managed a key victory against an Italian squad that bolstered with heavy fire power.
Sebastian Fernandez was the Uruguayan player who knocked in the only goal of the game to give Italy the loss. However, the Italians, after that goal scored in the 3rd minute of the game, turned up the heat and gave the Uruguayans a scared for the rest of the game. Still, victory for the Italians did not prevail.
The game, after the lone goal, was all one sided. Italy attacked with many chances created by Mario Balotelli. Uruguay relied with their defensive tactics and rare counter attacks throughout the game and it was very effective. They held the Italians from scoring.
The Uruguayans didn’t entirely play bunker defense. They played with a crowded midfield. This way the Uruguayans depended on midfield control and possibly create better counter attacks. But, the Italians were so desperate to look for the tie that they sent an overwhelming onslaught for the Uruguayan midfielders, driving them back into the defense.
In the end, the Italians had twenty shots with eight on goal. All eight shots on goal, unfortunately for Italy, were saved by Uruguayan goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, who had a decent career with Italian club team Lazio. Currently, he’s playing for Turkish club team Galatasaray.
The Italian squad also controlled the ball 68% to Uruguay’s control of 32%. This stat alone tells which team was the better team out there. However, in soccer, there is a major rule in order to win. That is to score the most goals. Uruguay only needed one for this match.

Uruguay - Chile 4:0

posted by Meya, date: 12. November 2011, News Archives/Archivos de noticias

Hero of the match: Luis Suarez!!!!!!
Uruguay striker Luis Suarez scored all four goals as the Copa America holders crushed Chile 4-0 on Friday to stay top of the South American 2014 World Cup qualifying group.
Suarez scored twice in each half, his goals spanning a 30-minute period in which Uruguay devastated Chile, who went into the match following coach Claudio Borghi`s dismissal of five of his players for indiscipline in midweek.
Chile were also weakened by the last-minute withdrawal of key player Alexis Sanchez, who aggravated a right biceps problem during the warm-up. Sanchez had been out for almost two months with the injury.
Suarez was substituted soon after his final goal to resounding cheers from the crowd of more than 40,000 at the Centenario stadium, and watched the rest of the game from the bench with the match ball under his arm.
"(I scored four goals) just once or twice at Ajax but it`s the first time for the national team and I`m very happy," Suarez told reporters.
"What`s important is that the team won well. It doesn`t matter who gets the goals," said Suarez, who helped Uruguay make light of the absence of fellow forward Diego Forlan.
Uruguay lead the nine-nation group with seven points from three matches after last month`s home 4-2 win over Bolivia and 1-1 draw at Paraguay. Chile, with three points, had previously lost 4-1 in Argentina and
beaten Peru 4-2 at home.

WC Qualifying Uruguay - Paraguay 1-1

posted by Meya, date: 12. October 2011, News Archives/Archivos de noticias

A late goal from Richard Ortiz prevented Paraguay from crashing to their second defeat in qualifying as they managed a 1-1 draw against Uruguay in Asuncion.
The two-time World Cup winners were the better side in the first half but failed to convert on two decent chances.
On the hour mark, Paraguay had their best opportunity, courtesy of Edgar Barreto, but the Palermo man's long-range effort flew by the left post, despite having room to take the ball closer to goal.
The Uruguayans finally struck when Diego Forlan finished right in front of goal after Luis Suarez skinned a defender with a quick move inside the box, allowing him to pace to the by-line before sending in a perfect, low cross to the Inter attacker, who was alone at the back post.
Paraguay pushed late looking to earn a share of the points, and they finally found the equaliser when Ortiz pounced on a loose ball in the box after Uruguay failed to clear a corner kick. The goal earned the home side their first points of the qualifying campaign.
Oscar Tabarez's men have four points from two matches.

WC Qualifying: Uruguay - Bolivia 4-2

posted by Meya, date: 10. October 2011, News Archives/Archivos de noticias

Copa America winners Uruguay, having begun with a promising 4-2 home win over outsiders Bolivia, now meet Paraguay, the team they beat to land the continental crown in July. Veteran Diego Forlan is warning that the test in Asuncion will be one of the most difficult of the tournament.

"We know Tuesday will be tough. They'll be playing at home and we know they have good players so it will be a hard one for us," said Inter Milan's Forlan, who needs one goal to become his country's all-time top scorer. "They always give us a tough workout and as this one is in Asuncion it will be no exception."

Paraguay got their campaign off to a rocky start in losing their opener away to Peru who, after a shocking 2010 qualifying programme, came third at the Copa America.

Fernando gave an interview for Galatasaray TV. Thanks to Ahmet for sending me the translation.

Your first camping with Galatasaray. It's like therapic camping with it's natural beauties. What would you say?
After a week vacation in Uruguay, I needed such a camping in order to achieve my phisical strength again. The league postponed, so shape and time of our work has changed. So, we needed this kind of camping.

You played your first game with Galatasaray against Olympiakos. What do you think about the game and your performance?
I felt good in my first game with Galatasaray, although the results was not as we wanted. But this kind of games are always usefull. To know my new teammates and see team's game plan and prepare for league.

It seems you, Kazim, Melo and Eboue have beatiful relationship. What do you want to say about it?
It's related to only language because I'm spending my time with them. I can only speak with them for now. I'm trying to talk with others in english or in other way and trying to know them too.

You were very good in Copa America. You were one of the best players. You signed a long-term contract with Galatasaray. What are your targets in long term with Galatasaray?

We had very good Copa America. The reason why I came here to win with a great team. Improve myself, I want to take further my goalkeeping abilities. When you win with a big team, your career will rise automatically. By becoming successfull with Galatasaray, I will develop myself and my team.

Have you picked your house in Istanbul? What do you want to say about Istanbul?
I have chosen a house near to the facilities. I have not had time to see Istanbul yet. But everyone said it was very beautifull ccity. I will do it soon. Very happy and proud that I came here.

What do you want to say about coach Fatih Terim? Maybe you found to know Fatih Terim in a short time.
It's very good to work with such a great coach. I saw it in very little amount of time. We all have much to learn from Fatih Terim. No need to discuss him. It's obvious that he had achievements with Fiorentina and Milan in Italy, and in Turkey. It always adds much to every player on working with Such a coach.

You are working with Claudio Taffarel, who is one of the best goalkeepers of alltime in the world. What you have to say about this?

He won many achievements on club basis and on national team basis. I'm very proud to work with such a coach and I'm enjoying it.I'm sure I can learn a lot from him.

What do you do in your spare times?

I would prefer to spend my free time with my girl friend. I'll be with her here and spend my spare time with her, and continue to work hard and make us happy. Normally I spend my time at home. I'm trying to give myself to my work.

There is not much time to the league start. What do you want to say to Galatasaray supporters?
I always tald so far, I will try to do my best. So will my teammates. We will always try to do our best to success, win and achieve big results with Galatasaray.

FIFA 2012

Fifa 2012 will only feature one Turkish side - Galatasaray.
The Turkish Football Federation, or TFF, ended the practice of dealing with video game producers on behalf of all teams in Turkish league.
It was the newly elected TFF chairman Mehmet Ali Aydınlar's first act in office to sack the practice, refusing to deal with video game producers EA Sports and Konami, the companies behind the two most popular football video games, FIFA and Pro-evolution Soccer, or PES.
Game producers will have to sign separate agreements with all 18 teams of the Turkish league from now on to incorporate them into their games.
Only Galatasaray will feature in FIFA 2012 from the Turkish Super League, they have been included in, 'Rest of the World' section.

Uruguay - Ukraine 3-2

posted by Meya, date: 4. september 2011, News Archives/Archivos de noticias

Uruguay beats Ukraine 3-2 in friendly. A goal by substitute Abel Hernandez four minutes from the end handed Uruguay a 3-2 friendly win against Ukraine as the Copa America champion twice came from behind Friday evening.
Euro 2012 host Ukraine took the lead in the first minute through Andriy Yarmolenko, before goalkeeper Oleksandr Shovkovskiy's weak attempt at a block allowed Alvaro Gonzalez's long-range shot to creep in, bringing Uruguay level.
Yevhen Konoplianka struck back immediately for Ukraine, but a headed goal from captain Diego Lugano in the second half and Hernandez's strike secured the win for the visitors.
Ukraine is now without a win in three games but put in a much livelier performance than in lackluster defeats to Sweden and France and was worth at least a draw.

Real Madrid - Galatasaray 2-1

posted by Meya, date: 25. august 2011, News Archives/Archivos de noticias

Real Madrid claimed their seventh-consecutive Santiago Bernabéu Trophy on Wednesday with a 2-1 victory over Galatasaray.
The match was actually more of a test for Real Madrid than many people expected.
Galatasaray opened the scoring only 10 minutes into the contest when midfielder Selçuk İnan scored. This was the first goal that Real Madrid had allowed in a Santiago Bernabéu Trophy match since 2008.
Order was restored when Sergio Ramos tied the game in the 33rd minute. Karim Benzema scored the winning goal early in the second half, giving Real Madrid a 2-1 lead that stood as the final score.

What does the win mean for Real Madrid?

In all honesty, this means very little. It's a small measure of redemption for Real Madrid after losing Supercopa de España to Barcelona last week.
They play in a stadium named after the Santiago Bernabéu, who is probably the most important figure in the history of the club—it's a trophy that they want to win.
Most of their opponents in this two-team tournament have no chance at beating Real Madrid. This was really no different.
This is a match that they had to win as a tune up for the regular season, and they did.
The fact that it wasn't a blowout isn't really a big deal. Sure, they would have liked a three- or four-goal win, but the win is the most important thing.

What does the loss mean for Galatasaray?

This is actually a little different. This was expected to be a blowout win for Real Madrid, and Galatasaray gave them a much better contest than anyone else has in recent years.
If nothing else, this match was a good measuring stick for Galatasaray to see how well they can compete against some of Europe’s best teams.
While they didn’t claim the trophy, they didn’t embarrass themselves either.
Losing is always difficult. Manager Faith Terim said in no uncertain terms that he wanted his team to win, according to Today's Zaman: It is not easy to play against Real Madrid in either an official game or a friendly. But it is good to see Galatasaray at Santiago Bernabeu. Playing in Spain again is an important rendezvous for a team that wants to be remembered again. Even though it is a friendly, it is important for Galatasaray to play well and take this seriously.

Real Madrid will face Galatasaray in the 33rd edition of the Santiago Bernabeu Trophy on Wednesday 24 August. Jose Mourinho's side will defend the title they won last year against Peñarol Montevideo.
Galatasaray will be the first Turkish side to participate in the competition. They finished eighth in the Turkish league last season and recently strengthened their squad with the signings of Ujfalusi and Elmander.
Real Madrid and Galatasaray have faced each other three times. Their first match was in the 2000 European Super Cup, which the Turks won thanks to a goal in extra time. They came face to face again a few months later in the Champions League quarterfinals; Galatasaray won the first leg in Istanbul 3-2, but the Whites sealed their pass to the next round with a 3-0 win at the Bernabeu in the return match.

La Copa Es Uruguaya!!!!!!!!

posted by Meya, date: 25. july 2011, News Archives/Archivos de noticias

Uruguay have won their first Copa America since 1995 after a comprehensive 3-0 win in the final over a toothless Paraguay at the Monumental in Buenos Aires.
La Celeste hit Gerardo Martino's side with a first half double salvo, courtesy of strikers Luis Suarez and Diego Forlan. The Atletico Madrid man completed his brace moments before the final whistle to ensure Uruguay's triumph for a record 15th time, one ahead now of their bitter rivals Argentina.
Oscar Tabarez' men made their intentions known right from the start as shortly after the opening whistle, Suarez nearly forced a goal with a shot from inside the six-yard box, but the ball hit the side-netting.Controversy ensued moments later when Diego Lugano powered a header from inside the penalty area, and Nestor Ortigoza stopped the ball with his hand only for the referee to wave play on, evoking protests from the Uruguayan camp.
Justice was served in the 11th minute when Suarez made his way down the right flank and unleashed a stinging shot, which deflected off Dario Veron before trickling into the left corner and past the goal line.
The game became scrappy as emotions were getting the better of the players. In the space of 18 minutes, the referee showed no less than four yellow cards in an effort to prevent further offence from both teams.
Uruguay had a wonderful chance to double their lead near the half-hour mark when Suarez released Forlan with an excellent through-ball, but the Atletico striker was denied by Justo Villar in a one-on-one.
Minutes before half-time, Uruguay did make it 2-0. Egidio Arevalo stole the ball in midfield, and found the unmarked Forlan, who made no mistake this time as he powered a scintillating finish in the right corner to double la Celeste's lead.
Paraguay tried to claw a goal back after the restart, but were struggling to bypass Uruguay's resilient defence and midfield.
Gerardo Martino's men were leaving plenty of open spaces, and la Celeste nearly capitalise in the 55th minute when Suarez threaded a pass for Forlan near the penalty spot, but Veron made a vital interception and deflected the shot.
Just before the hour mark, Paraguay went close to scoring when Nelson Valdez's powerful drive from outside the box was tipped onto the bar by the flying Nestor Muslera.
The Hercules striker had another chance moments later when Cristian Riveros found him with a very good ball from the right wing, but the striker failed to convert from close range.
Substitute Edinson Cavani forced a wonder save from Villar with 11 minutes to go as Oscar Tabarez' men were growing increasingly dangerous on the counter. And they put the icing on the cake through a fast break as Forlan completed his brace with a superb finish in injury time, following a cushioned header from Suarez.
The victory gives Uruguay their 15th Copa America title to become the most successful team in the tournament.

Fernando will head for Turkey at the end of his side's Copa América campaign after joining Galatasaray AŞ from Serie A club S.S. Lazio.

Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera has left S.S. Lazio to join Galatasaray AŞ, with the Istanbul side paying €6.75m for the 25-year-old.

Muslera will move to Turkey after the Copa América concludes this weekend, having saved a Carlos Tévez penalty to see Uruguay past Argentina in a quarter-final shoot-out. The one-time Montevideo Wanderers FC trainee was Lazio's first choice for the last two seasons, making 96 Serie A appearances in total since his arrival in 2007, and winning the Italian Cup with the Rome club in 2009.

Capped 25 times, Muslera is heading in the opposite direction to Albanian international midfielder Lorik Cana, who swapped Galatasaray for Lazio last weekend. Lazio will feature in the UEFA Europe League play-offs after finishing fifth in Serie A. Eighth in Turkey, Galatasaray have not earned a European place for 2011/12.

Uruguay in CA Finale!!

posted by Meya, date: 20. july 2011, News Archives/Archivos de noticias

A Luis Suarez quickfire double broke Peruvian hearts in La Plata, and ensured that Uruguay is the first team to book its place in the 2011 Copa America final with a 2-0 victory over the battling Inca outfit.

Suarez hit twice in five minutes to all but settle the game in the opening stages of the second half, making him joint top scorer for the tournament with Sergio Aguero, on three. Peru's task to turn its fortunes around was made even harder when captain Juan Manuel Vargas was expelled for a vicious elbow, but Sergio Markarian's team will go out with their heads held high after a gutsy display.
The game started at a great pace, with neither side willing to give an inch in front of the vociferous support. The result was an impressive quantity of fouls, and Victor Yotun found his way into the referee's notebook after just one minute.

Luis Suarez meanwhile found himself with an excellent chance after a free-kick went loose, but on the half-volley the Liverpool man shot high and wide to his own disgust. Raul Fernandez then morphed into an Inca hero with 15 minutes gone, twice denying Alvaro Pereira at his feet when a goal looked certain.

Peru was by no means second best, however, and halfway through the first period it had a glorious chance. Juan Manuel Vargas' cross flashed invitingly out of the reach of Fernando Muslera, but neither Paolo Guerrero or Luis Advincula could reach with their despairing lunges and the ball ran harmlessly out of play.

Uruguay finished the half with a spell of decent pressure, but despite threatening a handful of times - principally from the right boot of Diego Forlan on dead-ball situations - it could not break down a determined Peru team. Captain Diego Lugano thought that he had forced the ball in late in the half to open the score, but play was called back for a foul on goalkeeper Fernandez to ensure the sides went down the tunnel with nothing to separate them.

The breakthrough came just after the break, and it was to the joy of the Celeste section of the crowd. Forlan tried a speculative effort from outside the box, and when Fernandez spilled the ball it was Suarez who pounced first and chipped into the open net. The striker was mobbed by team mates on the side of the pitch, while the Uruguayan fans burst into song as a place in the final moved closer to becoming a reality.

The Liverpool man was on a roll, and slotted a second home just minutes later to make it 2-0. Alvaro Pereira played Suarez in with a delightful through-ball, and he made no mistake in rounding the keeper and rolling the ball in to send the Charrua into ecstasy.

Already on the ropes, Peru's chances took a further blow when inspirational captain Juan Manuel Vargas saw red, the referee sending him from the pitch for landing an elbow on Sebastian Coates's nose in a nasty move. The team kept trying and insisting, but could not find the means to break through the Uruguay back-line, leaving Diego Forlan and Co. to claim victory by a two goal margin.

The win puts Oscar Tabarez's team into the final for the first time since the 1999. It will play the winner of Paraguay-Venezuela this Sunday in the Monumental.

Fernando Muslera Frustrate Argentina

posted by Meya, date: 18. july 2011, News Archives/Archivos de noticias

Fernando Muslera was absolutely incredible against Argentina on Saturday night in a quarterfinal match of the 2011 Copa America tournament.
Uruguay leaned heavily on Muslera to make save after save.
This save on Carlos Tevez's free kick was incredible, and so was the rebound save.
Muslera was born in Argentina and has dual-citizenship. He could have played for either Uruguay or Argentina, but he decided to join Uruguay.
That decision paid off for him on Saturday night as he made these saves in extra time and then stunned Tevez again in the shootout.
Argentina is the host country for this year's Copa America and were considered the betting favorite entering the tournament. However, they looked sluggish in the group stages as Colombia came away with the top spot in the group.
Argentina has only won one match in this tournament, which came against Costa Rica's U-22 team, which not something many Argentinians will be bragging about.
Uruguay will now advance to the semifinals where they will face another extremely surprising semifinalist, Peru. Not many people even expected Peru to advance beyond the group stages, but now they find themselves facing Uruguay in the semifinals.

Mi dispiace perché sono stati quattro anni bellissimi, di sofferenza, ma anche di tanto piacere. Vediamo quello che succederà, il mio contratto scadrebbe nel 2012, ma tutto sembra già deciso”

Even if I have not signed with any club, from what I have heard it's done so I'd like to thank the club and all the fans. It's too bad because it's been four wonderful years, some difficult, but also of great pleasure. We will see what will happen, my contract expires in 2012, but it seems all has already been decided.

Uruguay tops Argentina on penalty kicks

posted by Meya, date: 17. july 2011, News Archives/Archivos de noticias

Uruguay advanced to the semifinals of the Copa America with a penalty shootout victory over hosts Argentina on Saturday, with Carlos Tevez having his spotkick saved by goalkeeper Fernando Muslera in the decider.
The game ended 1-1 after regulation time and there was no addition to that scoreline in extra time. The final tally in the shootout was 5-4 to Uruguay.
Diego Perez gave Uruguay a surprise 1-0 lead in the 6th minute, but Gonzalo Higuain equalized in the 18th. Argentina had a man advantage from the 39th when Perez received his second yellow. But Muslera and Uruguay's rugged defense stopped Argentina, which had a dozen chances in regulation and extra time.
The teams returned to even strength when Argentina captain Javier Mascherano was sent off in the 87th.
Uruguay will face Peru in the semifinals on Tuesday.
On Sunday, Brazil faces Paraguay and Chile plays Venezuela in the remaining quarterfinals.
It's a bitter loss for Argentina, which was aiming to win its first major trophy in 18 years; and hoping to do it at home with Lionel Messi, the world's best player. Messi showed flashes, but was unable to deliver for his home nation where he has been often criticized for not performing as well as he does at Barcelona.
Argentina never gelled as a team, winning only one match in four at the tournament. That against an under-23 team that Costa Rica fielded as a guest nation from the CONCACAF region.
The website of the Argentine sports daily "Ole" immediatley called the loss "a national failure. Good-bye to the dream of winning the Copa at home. Not even Messi can save us"
Again, Argentina's smaller neighbor Uruguay was the better side. Last year in the World Cup in South Africa, Uruguay also reached the semifinals with Argentina going out at the quarterfinal stage.
Argentina and Uruguay have each won this event 14 times, and Brazil has won eight. But Brazil has won four of the past five.
"We've managed to reach our first objective, which was to match our results in the last Copa America," Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez said.
Argentina coach Sergio Batista is now likely to come under enormous pressure. Batista replaced Diego Maradona following the World Cup, and immediately after the match was asked if he planned to resign.
"I'm not thinking about that," he said. "It has never crossed by mind. I have to continue on the job. My job started five or six months ago, and I have to continue with my plans. The important thing is the (2014) World Cup.
"I can't be happy," he added. "One does not like to be eliminated. But I am content with my players."
Batista denied that a quarterfinal exit could be considered a failure.
"It is not a failure because we did all we could to win, and it didn't happen," Batista said. "Failure is a strong word. We worked to win but couldn't do it."
Batista acknowledged his team's play fell off in the second half. And that included Messi, who has now failed to score in his past 16 official games -- not counting friendlies -- for the national team.
"Messi had 30 exceptional minutes in the first half. In the second we lost our intensity."
Argentina controlled the early part of the match with Messi often splitting the Uruguay defense with precision passes.
But when Uruguay went down a man, it became more defense-minded and Argentina struggled to break down its opponent. When the Gauchos did manage to put some play together, Muslera came up with a dozen key saves.
Messi and Gonzalo Higuain almost won it several times in the second half. Messi forced Muslera into a diving save in the 63rd minute. In the 78th, Higuain took a pass from Messi in the area, and turned and fired with Muslera sprawling to stop his shot.
Javier Pastore tested Muslera a few minutes later.
In the final minute of regulation time, Messi's free kick from 30 meters was headed for the goal until Muslera kicked out his left leg for a miraculous save.
Uruguay striker Diego Forlan almost snatched the game with the last shot of regulation time.
In extra time, Messi, Pastore and Higuain all had chances further chances to net the winner. The best came in the 111th when Higuain shot into the outside of the netting from close range.
The shootout was level at 2-2 when Tevez went for power rather than placement, and Muslera guessed right, diving to his right to block the shot. All the other spotkicks were converted.

Uruguay - Mexico 1-0

posted by Meya, date: 13. july 2011, News Archives/Archivos de noticias

Uruguay are through to the last eight of the Copa America after defeating Mexico 1-0 at the Estadio Ciudad de La Plata.
Alvaro Pereira's goal on the quarter-hour mark gave Oscar Tabarez's men all three points, and the victory sets up a mouth-watering quarter-final clash against hosts Argentina on Saturday.
Both teams were tense during the initial stages, with more than a few attacking moves halted by untimely slips on the rain-soaked pitch. Perhaps befitting the disjointed tone of the opening exchanges, it was a scrappy goal from Uruguay that opened the scoring 15-minutes in.
After Luis Suarez was fouled, Diego Forlan sent a teasing free kick into the crowded Mexican box which took a deflection on its way to goal. Luis Michel saw it late, and could only palm the ball into the path of Pereira, who made no mistake from a yard out.
It took Mexico 24 minutes to register their first real chance of the match, when Giovani dos Santos broke free down the left flank and forced a decent save from Fernando Muslera, who had been merely a spectator up until that point.
However, that chance proved to be something of an aberration amid increasing Uruguayan pressure, and Tabarez’s men nearly doubled their lead on the half hour mark. Maxi Pereira did well to squeeze in a cross under pressure from the right byline. His pass evaded the Mexican defence and found Forlan, who had time to control the ball, but somehow struck the post from less than 10 yards out.
Uruguay then had another opportunity to grab a second on 36 minutes. Suarez found space and let fly with a bouncing shot from 25 yards out, which Michel did well to tip wide. It proved to be the last meaningful action before referee Raul Orosco blew the whistle for half-time.The South Americans continued to press in the second half, and Forlan should have done better on 63 minutes when he skied Suarez’s deft cross over the bar from six yards out. Moments later, Forlan turned provider for Suarez when he released his strike partner through on goal, but the Liverpool man disappointingly placed his finish wide of the far post.
The chances continued to come for Uruguay, and substitute Nicolas Lodeiro struck the post after he was picked out by lively Suarez on 72 minutes. Not long after that, Forlan carved his way into the box, but once again, his finish deserted him as he fired the ball high over the crossbar.
Uruguay could not find the clinching second goal, and were almost made to pay for their profligacy with 10 minutes remaining. Marquez Lugo was certain that he had equalised for Mexico after turning in a free kick, but replays showed that he strayed fractionally offside, and the linesman’s flag halted the celebrations.
It proved to be the closest that the North Americans would get to an equaliser, and Uruguay saw out the last few minutes to seal their place in the last eight.
The win sees Uruguay finish second in Group C on five points, which ensures a date with Group A runners-up Argentina in the quarter-finals. Meanwhile, Mexico crash out of the tournament at the bottom of the group, having failed to pick up a single point in any of their three games.
Peru also qualify for the last eight, by virtue of their superior record to Group A third-placed team Costa Rica.

Uruguay - Chile 1-1

posted by Meya, date: 11. july 2011, News Archives/Archivos de noticias

Alvaro Pereira and Alexis Sanchez each found the net in the second half as Chile and Uruguay played out a thrilling 1-1 draw in the Copa America.

With the Estadio Malvinas Argentinas in Mendoza drenched in red and blue, a victory for the Chileans would send them through to the quarter-finals with one group game to spare.
But it was Uruguay who made the better start, putting pressure on their opponents right after the opening whistle. The Group C leaders looked to play through Sanchez down the right, but they were barely able to string passes together and it was their rivals that got the best chances early on.

Diego Forlan knocked a long ball down for Edison Cavani at the top of the box. The Napoli man, with his back to the goal, flicked the ball over his head to Luis Suarez, sending the former Ajax star through on goal, but the striker could only hammer his shot over the bar.

With Chile failing to produce quality looks on goal, Claudio Borghi's men nearly gave the opener away moments later. Pablo Contreras looked to play the ball back to goalkeeper Claudio Bravo, but Suarez intercepted in the middle of the box, taking it towards the by-line before lofting a cross to Forlan near the back post, but the Atletico Madrid striker's weak header was cleared off the line.
Neither team could find the breakthrough in the opening 45 minutes, but Chile almost scored a bizarre goal just before the interval when Sebastien Coates' clearance ricochet off Mauricio Isla from 25 yards out, and the ball looped over Nestor Muslera only to cannon back out off the bar. It took Uruguay just eight minutes into the restart to break the deadlock thanks to the determination of Suarez, who controlled the ball in the crowded box before beating his marker to the by-line to send in a low cross to Pereira right in front of goal. With no defenders around him, the former CFR Cluj man settled the ball in front of goal before slotting home a low shot.

Chile responded ten minutes later when Sanchez fired home from the middle of the box into the bottom right corner of the goal off a pass from Jean Beausejour to level the score.

Both teams continued to press forward in search of a winning goal, with Uruguay's Muslera the busiest of the two goalkeepers in the final stages as he pulled off two important saves to helps his side to a share of the spoils. Chile remain in first place with four points, while Uruguay have two points.

Next, the 14-time Copa America winners will take on Mexico in their final group game. The Chileans will face Peru.

Copa America: Uruguay - Peru 1-1

posted by Meya, date: 5. july 2011, News Archives/Archivos de noticias

Uruguay kicked off their 2011 Copa America campaign in disappointing fashion, after only managing a come-from-behind 1-1 draw with Peru on Monday.
Paolo Guerrero broke the deadlock midway through the first half, before Luis Suarez spared Uruguay's blushes with a crucial equaliser right on the stroke of half time.
The match began in favour of the 14-time Copa champions as they started the brightest, with various snap-shots from Suarez and Forlan testing the Peruvian resistance early on, but to no avail.
Peru came into the match with a major disadvantage, as their talismanic duo of Claudio Pizarro and Jefferson Farfan were both forced to prematurely end their respective Copa campaigns through injury. However, it was they who claimed the game's first goal through striker Guerrero, with a superb solo goal on 23 minutes. The Hamburg man impeccably timed his run off the shoulders of Diego Lugano and Mauricio Victorino, collecting a raking long ball from deep in his own half, and then proceeded to shift past an on-rushing Fernando Muslera and tap the ball into the net for a surprise Peruvian lead.
Oscar Tabarez's side proceeded to hit back, and they almost did so in spectacular fashion through the set-piece talents of Forlan, with two curling efforts forcing Raul Fernandez to stay on his toes.
Uruguay were not to stay behind for too long though, as against the subsequent run of play, Suarez collected Nicolas Lodeiro's magnificently threaded through ball and impressively slid in the finish to give his side a precious equaliser right at the interval.
The second half began in reasonable contrast to the first, with few valid goalscoring opportunities. Luis Advincula had the best chance of the opening period, after being expertly teed up in the Uruguayan box by Michael Guevara, but he could only fire the ball into the hands of Muslera.
Uruguay then went on to better that by creating the best chance of the entire match. Suarez put the ball on a plate for the misfiring Forlan, who had a free opening at goal in the Peru box, but he ballooned his effort way over the bar.
Peru threw on Fiorentina's Juan Vargas for the last 20 minutes, who was not deemed fit enough to start the match, in an attempt to try and snatch a late victory, and he almost proved to be an inspired substitution after coming close with two stinging long-range attempts.
Indeed, it was the Peruvians who could have tied up a famous win right at the death, but it wasn't to be as Guerrero failed to divert a free header goal-bound from a cross on the left-hand side, and deny themselves from capping an impressive performance with an important three points.
